A genuine hardwood wear layer over a stable plywood core — made for slab foundations and humidity swings that solid hardwood struggles with.
Most DFW homes are built on a concrete slab, not a raised wood subfloor. Solid hardwood can cup or gap over a slab as humidity swings through the year. Engineered wood's plywood core is dimensionally stable, so it holds up better over slab — and it's compatible with some radiant heat setups solid hardwood can't handle.
What most people aren't told: it's real wood on top, but the wear layer thickness determines how many times it can be sanded and refinished. Thin wear layers — common on entry-level products — may take one light refinish or none at all. Thicker wear layers can take two or three. Ask what the actual wear layer thickness is before buying on price alone.
