Why quartz is the low-maintenance default

Quartz is engineered stone — crushed quartz bound with resin — which makes it non-porous. It never needs sealing, resists stains from wine and oil that would sink into natural stone, and comes in a wide, consistent range of colors and patterns.

What most people aren't told: quartz is heat-resistant, not heatproof. A hot pan straight off the stove can discolor or even crack the resin binder — something granite shrugs off. And because the pattern is manufactured rather than natural, quartz's consistency can read as less distinctive up close than real stone, even though it's priced similarly to granite. Some resin-based colors can fade slightly with years of direct sun, so it's not the top pick right next to a sun-drenched window wall.
